Jitters over the reign of terror currently being meted out by the Islamic State (ISIS) globally, yesterday brought central Port-of-Spain to a halt.
The situation developed after police and Fire Services officials shut down Park Street, between Frederick and Henry Streets, after reports that a strange package had been seen on the ground in the basement carpark of a major commercial bank.
One senior Fire Services official, who spoke to CNC3 off camera yesterday, said police received the report about the strange package and initially responded.
Employees and customers from three commercial banks in the area — First Citizens, Republic Bank and RBC — were then evacuated.
After an external examination, the Bomb Squad opened the packaged and determined it was not a danger to the public. Law enforcement officials, however, refused to say what was in the package.
Staff at the three banks were later allowed to return but RBC remained closed to the public.
