Special Reserve Police Constable Sean Joseph was denied bail yesterday when he appeared before a San Fernando Magistrate charged with beating two Chinese businessmen and robbing them of over $400,000 last Friday.
Joseph, who has three years service and was stationed at the San Juan Police Sub-station, was not called upon to plead when his matter was called before Senior Magistrate Nanette Forde-John in the San Fernando First Court.
The prosecution, led by Sgt Cleyon Seedan, objected to bail as they wanted to confirm Joseph’s claim he had no passport to surrender with the Immigration Division.
Under the Section 24(1) (b) of the Larceny Act, Forde-John read the charge that on November 11 at Johnson Avenue, Soledad Road West, Claxton Bay, Joseph was armed with a gun when he assaulted and robbed Wei Hui Zhu of $406,000 cash, an Apple Iphone 7, valued at $7,000, and one FX Revolution air rifle valued at $20,000. He was also accused of assaulting and robbing Jin Fu Zhu of an Apple iPhone 6 valued at $6,000.
There was a third charged of being caught with 22 rounds of .380 ammunition at the San Juan Police Sub-Station later that day, contrary to Section 6 (1) of the Firearm Act. Joseph was not the holder of a Firearm User Licence.
Seedan asked that if bail be granted, Joseph be restricted from communicating with his alleged victims by any means, including social media. The robbery matters were adjourned to today while the gun possession case was transferred to the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court.
