An Independent candidate was last night undergoing emergency treatment after he was shot in the chest while campaigning through the Santa Flora area.
Victor Roberts, who is registered as a candidate for the Palo Seco seat in tomorrow’s local government elections, was shot around 5.45 pm, police said.
This is the latest in a string of incidents of violence during this election season.
According to a police report, Roberts was in the tray of a pick-up van campaigning with his supporters when a loud explosion was heard. Roberts collapsed and was assisted by supporters.
He was taken to the Siparia Health Facility and transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was undergoing surgery last night.
Police could not say whether the shooting incident was politically motivated.
Yesterday was the last day for the various political parties and candidates to campaign.
No one was arrested. Officers of the Santa Flora and Siparia police stations visited the scene and are continuing investigations.
