Six months after their mother died, a Couva family suffered another tragedy yesterday when their father’s decomposing body, bearing chop wounds, was found in his yard.

Police were still gathering information yesterday and had not yet determined a motive for the murder of 60-year-old Teeluckdharry Seenath.

Police were alerted by residents of Derry Lane, McBean, Couva, after they discovered the body.

A resident said that someone was passing and saw ducks picking at what he thought to be a dead dog. Upon closer inspection, however, he realised it was Seenath, fondly called Maharaj in the neighbourhood. The body, which was bareback, was lying in the yard next to the house. A rake was found close to the body.

Seenath, a construction worker, lived with his daughter, Stephanie, 23, his son Mark, 30 and her two children ages eight and five years old. He has two other children. Seenath was last seen alive by residents on Saturday.

His daughter, Stephanie, took her two children and went out for the weekend. She said someone called her and when she got home around 8.30 am the police were already there.

“They told me my father died but I did not get much information. They told me I have to wait until forensic came, but from what I heard is that he was chopped on the head and neck. His skull was in half,” she said.

Stephanie had no idea why anyone would want to hurt her father and nothing seemed out of place to suggest that he was robbed. Lamenting that only six months ago her mother suffered a fatal heart attack, she said: “To lose two parents in half of a year. It is very hard.”

She said an autopsy is carded for today at the Forensic Science Centre.
