Two prison officers were chopped at the Golden Grove Remand Yard Prison in Arouca last Friday.
The incident took place shortly after 9 am when a group of prisoners were being led back in their cells on the upper floor of the North Wing when a fracas broke out.
The officers – one from the airing batch and another from the main batch—were chopped with improvised weapons, sources said.
One of the officers, T&T Guardian understands was slashed on the left arm. A prisoner, who was also injured in the incident.
The two prison officers and the prisoner were later treated.
T&T Guardian was told that one of the injured officers returned to duty yesterday.
In another separate incident, T&T Guardian was told that a senior prison officer had his baton taken away from him by prisoners and but he managed to escape a beating.
Another officer, in a separate incident, was also beaten with a broomstick.
T&T Guardian was told by a prison officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, that the long period of peace between two warring gangs at the prison—the Rasta City and the Muslims—had been threatened by a prisoner who was recently transferred from the condemned section to the Upper North Wing of the Remand Yard.
The officer said no reason was given as to why the prisoner was transferred but noted that since then there has been “unrest” between the two fractions.
The officers are concerned that their attacks would be “swept under the carpet”. They are calling on an immediate intervention from the Commissioner of Prisons (CoP), Sterling Stewart.
When contacted yesterday for comment, Stewart, said he was awaiting a full report from one of his senior officers.
