A 25-year-old man was killed after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the Beetham Highway near the Port-of-Spain market yesterday.
The pedestrian was identified as James Layton, 25, of Anchor Drive, Westmoorings. He died on the spot, police said.
A report said around 1.25 am, Layton was crossing in a southerly direction when he was struck by a passing vehicle.
Officers said they were still conducting inquiries. They questioned and released the driver.
Officers from the Besson Street Police Station are continuing investigations.
According to statistics from road safety watchdog group Arrive Alive there have been over 30 fatal accidents so far this year and pedestrians account for 13 of those deaths.
The Ministry of Works and the Port-of-Spain City Corporation last month began a project to construct a walkover at Sea Lots.
The $10m project was launched four years after Sea Lots residents, 28-year-old Haydee Paul and her two daughters Akasha, seven, and Shakira, eight, were killed after a car ploughed into them while walking along the west bound lane of the Beetham Highway.
Vendors at the Central Market will be relocated to accommodate the facility.
The walkover is expected to be completed by October.
