A New Grant man with 15 outstanding court matters was shot dead during a shootout with police on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said residents of Hindustan were now breathing easier as there were several reports that Terrence “Bolo” Scipio had been terrorising and robbing members of the community in recent months.

He was in hiding since skipping several matters last year at the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court.

A report said Princes Town CID officers, led by Sgt Ramlogan, were patrolling Nagee Road around 5.15 pm when on reaching a teak field, they noticed Scipio riding a bicycle in the opposite direction.

On seeing the police vehicle, they said, he pulled out a gun which was tucked in his waist and rode off the road.

He fired several shots at them before running downhill into the teak trees.

The officers said as they pursued Scipio, he fell, got up and shot at them a few more times. They returned fire, hitting him in his chest.

The officers recovered a .38 revolver loaded with four rounds of ammunition and found two spent shells. As they searched his clothes, they found five more bullets in his pocket.

He was taken to Princes Town District Health Facility where Dr Baksh pronounced him dead on arrival. Supt Phillip, Insp Ramnarine, Cpl Steele and crime scene investigator Cpl Mohammed visited and processed the scene.

A trace on Scipio showed that he was charged in January 2015 for shooting, wounding and gun possession and he was granted bail when he appeared in court.

Police said he attended several hearings before going into a hiding and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Prior to 2015, he was charged for robbery, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and marijuana possession.
